The Arousor is the only classic knee compressor plugin made by the creators of the Distressor, Empirical Labs. Features

Attack Modification

Fine tune the attack curve of the compression envelope with AtMod. The attack modification knob slows down the initial slope of the attack envelope to add just a little bit more of the transient back into the track. Whether it’s to get a little bit more snap on the snare track or more thump on the electric bass, the AtMod will let the transients through without losing your desired amount of compression.

Colorful Saturation

Add some vintage-style harmonic distortion to any track with the soft clipper. Whether you are looking for subtle or extreme amounts of total harmonic distortion, the soft clipper knob merges both of the distortion settings on the Distressor to grant the user complete control of total harmonic distortion without having to adjust the input level of the Arousor.

Advanced Detector Sidechain

Dial in exactly where you want the compression to trigger with 2 bands of sidechain EQ. This advanced detector sidechain EQ expands both of the preset detection filter circuits on the Distressor into a controllable hi-pass and parametric sidechain. Control the exact point on the frequency spectrum where you want compression to be triggered without losing any low-end.

Rivet Mode

Get maximum gain reduction with the Rivet mode along with all of the ratios you know and love from the Distressor. Modeled after the Distressor’s Nuke Ratio, Rivet provides the steepest compression ratio a compressor plugin can provide to slam room mics and more.

  • Two OPTO Modes based on the time constants of a classic and a modern LA2A
  • Soft Clipper Expert Panel that allows for introducing more second harmonic distortion and the ability to place the compressor input before or after the soft clipper circuit.
  • Detector Sidechain EQ now includes a listen mode to hear what frequencies are affecting the compression detector.
  • Two new ratios (6.5:1 and 7:1) can now be accessed by enabling “ALT” mode in the ratio section.

Arousor Rev 3 is free for all current Arousor users. All you have to do is download the latest installer from the downloads page.

Yes and no. The Arousor is more of an evolution of the Distressor than it is an emulation because it has much more advanced features like the AtMod and the Soft Clipper.

    I love this plugin, although I really would love to see the “brit mod” put into it. That is the main thing I use on my parallel drum buss (copying Michal Brauer’s settings) and the Brit Mod is a big part of that sound.

    I would love to eventually be all ITB, and having the brit mod on this plugin would be essential to me. Thanks!!

    Having used the Distressor for years, I’ve been aware of the Arouser plug-in since it’s release, but until recently haven’t had need of software solutions.

    I was examining the options for dynamic control for my own studio and downloaded the free trial.

    I’m often disappointed by claims made for modelled versions of beloved hardware, but I can honestly say that the Arouser goes beyond the capabilities of the Distressor in some ways, and in the course of a single evening I realised it was one of those rare beasts, a genuinely useful tool.

    It now sits in my “go to” list alongside the Sonnox OXF-R3 EQ, the Echo Boy delay, Altiverb and the Waves Renaissance pack.

    I’ve yet to find a situation that the Arouser can’t do a decent job in, sure there may be specific units that can edge it for some things, but as a starting point for any mix issue, it’s invaluable.

    Thoroughly recommended plug-in, and I don’t say that lightly of a £200+ unit…

    I have bought or demoed many many compressor plugins and the Arouser is by far my favourite. I’ve used the real distressor a few times before and whether this is exactly the same or not is somewhat irrelevant. It sounds amazing. It’s awesome on lead vocals, it’s awesome on bass and, due to the attack mod section, you can REALLY make your drums ‘smack’ like never before.
    This plugin really is a joy to use, it completely re shaped my mixes for the better and added some serious mojo. It’s expensive I know but if you can spare some bucks it’s really worth it.

    I have owned a Distressor for 15 years and use it on every record I make. It’s one of my go to compressors when I am at any studio that has them. The Eli Arousor is a great plug-in take on the distressor. It can do the things that I expect from the Distressor and also some things that the hardware version cannot.
